Brushing the horses/ponies is important so that dirt and sweat residue do not cause irritation. Additionally, brushing helps you become familiar with the horse/pony. You will need the following brushes to groom and brush the horse:
- Curry comb
- Hard plastic brush
- Hard brush
- Soft brush
- Hoof pick
- Mane comb
1. Curry comb
The curry comb is used to loosen dirt, sweat and nearly loose hairs and to massage the circulation. You make massaging circular motions with the hair. Be sure to skip the head and legs.
2. Hard plastic brush
The hard plastic brush is used to remove most hairs and coarse dirt and to put the hair back in shape. You brush with the hair. Skip the head and legs again.
3. Hard brush
The hard brush is used to remove all loose hairs and dirt. You brush with the hair. With this brush you also brush the legs. Be careful with the hind legs! Skip the head. The tail can be brushed with this brush.
4. Soft brush
The soft brush is used for shine and the head of the horse. Here too, you brush with the hair. The entire horse can be brushed with this brush.
5. Mane comb
The mane comb is used to comb out the mane and forelock of the pony. Not the tail!
6. Hoof pick
The hoof pick is used to remove dirt and stones from the horse's hooves.
If you need help grooming or saddling your horse/pony, please let the stable staff know. Twice a year we offer a grooming course to familiarize young riders with brushing the riding ponies.
